Nerja History: The history of Nerja stretches back into the mists of time, as demonstrated by the Caves of Nerja, in which cave paintings have been found which date back to the Paleolithic Era and the Bronze Age.

During Roman times it became a settlement called Detunda, ruins of this settlement have been found near to Maro. Much later it attracted the attention of the Moors during the Arab occupation of Spain (8th to 13th centuries), when it became known as Narixa, it was controlled by the more powerful Velez-Malaga but still flourished through silk production and agriculture.

The Christian reconquest of Nerja occurred at the end of the 15th century, leading to repression of its inhabitants, who were forced to renounce their Muslim religion, many subsequently fled the area.

Due to constant attacks by Barbary pirates, numerous watchtowers and fortifications were built along the coast, one such tower called Torre del los Guardas is now called the Balcon de Europa (a name suggested by Alfonso XII in 1885).

Nerja also became well known for its sugar cane production, resulting in the construction of the Las Aguilas aqueduct (still intact today) during the 19th century.

The 20th century saw the arrival of tourism, and this is now the major source of income for the town, being a popular holiday resort for both Spanish and International visitors.
